Fruit farming is an important source of income for many farmers in Jammu and Kashmir. The government is also encouraging farmers to move towards high-density orchards instead of using only the old plantation methods.
Financial assistance under the J&K High Density Plantation Scheme is provided for establishment of high density fruit orchards. The scheme includes a range of fruits such as apple, pear, cherry, almond, walnut, kiwi and dragon fruit.
The modified scheme has been approved for the period 2022-23 to 2026-27. Overall a subsidy of 50% has been given for the crops covered under the scheme.
What is High Density Plantation?
In a normal orchard, trees are planted farther apart. In a high density orchard, plants are planted closer together, and the orchard is managed differently.

How Much Subsidy Does the Farmer Get?
The revised scheme provides 50% overall subsidy for the high-density plantation program.
The amount is not calculated simply by taking half of whatever a farmer spends. The subsidy is linked to the approved cost and the items covered under the scheme.
So, if you are planning a new orchard, first find out the approved cost for your crop and the assistance available for it. This can save you from spending money based on an old subsidy figure.
Who Can Apply for the J&K High Density Plantation Scheme?
The scheme is for farmers who want to develop a high-density orchard on eligible land.
The J&K JanSugam portal has a separate service called “Booking for development of high density orchard.” It is available for individual applicants, and the service can be accessed online or through a kiosk.
Land records are needed for this service. The current JanSugam listing asks for documents such as a Revenue Extract, Land Holding Certificate and Land Demarcation Certificate.
The farmer also needs land suitable for the proposed plantation.

- Enter the details asked in the application.
- Provide the required land documents.
- Submit the application.
- Keep the application or acknowledgement details with you.

What Happens After the Application?
After the application is submitted, the department checks the details and documents.
The proposed land and plantation can also be checked by the concerned officials. Farmers should follow the instructions given by the department before starting work that is connected with the subsidy.

Can a Farmer Take a Loan?
Yes, bank finance can be used for high-density plantation projects.
The J&K EDI scheme compendium lists bank financing of up to 80% for the scheme.
J&K Bank also has a High Density Plantation loan product for farmers. The bank’s current information covers several of the same fruit crops included under the government plantation programme.
Loan approval is a separate matter from the government subsidy. The bank decides the loan amount and other terms after checking the project and the applicant.
If you plan to use a bank loan, ask the bank about the loan amount, repayment period, margin and security requirements before starting the plantation.
Is the Scheme Available in 2026?
The revised High Density Plantation Scheme was approved up to 2026-27. The government has continued to include high-density and medium-density plantation work in its horticulture plans.
For 2026-27, the J&K Budget provides for 1,455 hectares under High/Medium Density Plantation.
The JanSugam portal also continues to show the service for booking the development of a high-density orchard.
