What is J&K Ladli Beti Scheme?

Ladli Beti is a social assistance scheme of Jammu and Kashmir government for eligible girl children belonging to economically weaker families.

The scheme was launched in 2015 and the government makes periodic financial contributions in the name of the girl child. The funds are not given directly to the family in cash, but are administered through a separate account structure set up under the scheme.

The money is kept for a longer period so that the girl child can receive the benefit later, instead of the entire amount being paid at once.

Who is eligible for the Ladli Beti Scheme?

The first things to check are the child’s date of birth and the family income.

According to the official J&K scheme information, it is for girl children born on or after 01-04-2015. In addition, the annual income of the parent or guardian should not be more than ₹75,000.

The J&K Government guidelines also mention residency or domicile requirements. Documents like a domicile certificate of the father and proof of identity/address are required for the present application process.

How much money is provided under the Ladli Beti Scheme?

This scheme has a slightly different payment structure.

According to the current banking guidelines of the J&K Govt, ₹1,000 per month is contributed by the government in Phase I. This is channeled through a recurring deposit account for the initial phase of 14 years.

After completing the 14-year recurring phase, the account enters the second phase. The second stage is a cumulative term deposit for 7 years.

According to the current information published by J&K Bank, the total government contribution over the 14-year period is ₹1,68,000. In the second stage, the amount remains in the term deposit and earns interest as applicable.

The Ladli Beti Scheme is not simply a monthly cash assistance programme because the ₹1,000 contribution is credited to the beneficiary’s scheme account.

How does the Ladli Beti Scheme account operate?

The scheme account is run in two phases.

Phase I – Recurring Deposit

During this phase the government adds ₹1,000 every month. The account is held as a recurring deposit for a period of 14 years.

Under the rules of the bank’s scheme, no credit other than the monthly contribution made by the government is permissible to this account.

Phase II – Cumulative Term Deposit

After completion of 14-year recurring deposit phase, the account is converted to a cumulative term deposit for a period of seven years.

Currently, as per the bank guidelines, there is no facility for premature closure of the account, unlike a normal savings account. The scheme rules lay down restrictions on foreclosure and partial withdrawals.
